Global Scientists and Engineers Program (GSEP) at Science Tokyo: 2027 Admission Guide
The Global Scientists and Engineers Program (GSEP) at the Institute of Science Tokyo offers international students an opportunity to pursue a Bachelor of Engineering in English. What Is the GSEP Programme?
GSEP is an international undergraduate programme within the Department of Transdisciplinary Science and Engineering, School of Environment and Society at Science Tokyo.
Rather than concentrating exclusively on one conventional engineering discipline, students are exposed to science, engineering and management. The programme uses approaches such as project-based learning, practical activities, team teaching and interdisciplinary projects.

How the Selection Process Works
1. Online Application
Applicants should first read the official application guide and confirm that they satisfy the eligibility requirements.
The required information and documents are submitted through Science Tokyo’s online application system. Applicants must enter their information in English, upload the required materials and pay the application fee.
2. Recommendation Form
Applicants are required to arrange an Applicant Evaluation and Recommendation Form.
The recommender is normally the principal of the applicant’s most recently attended high school. The applicant provides the recommender’s email address through the application system, after which the recommender submits the evaluation and recommendation directly to Science Tokyo.
Applicants should therefore allow sufficient time for their recommender to complete this part of the process.
3. Preliminary Screening
Science Tokyo reviews the submitted application documents. The screening is conducted by the Admissions Division together with professors from the Department of Transdisciplinary Science and Engineering.
Applicants who pass this stage proceed to the secondary screening.
4. Secondary Screening
The secondary screening consists of a written examination and an interview.
The written examination covers:
- Mathematics
- Physics
- Chemistry
Applicants who reach this stage receive additional information about the examination and interview.
English Language Requirements
Applicants are normally required to provide evidence of English proficiency.
The accepted tests listed in the programme information are:
- TOEFL iBT, including TOEFL iBT Home Edition
- TOEIC L&R
- IELTS Academic — paper
- IELTS Academic — computer-delivered
Science Tokyo states that there is no minimum English-test score requirement.
The English-language test must have been taken within two years before the final day of the application period.
Applicants using IELTS should pay particular attention to the format requirements. Online IELTS Academic is not accepted, and PDF score reports are not accepted. Test results must be submitted to Science Tokyo according to the university’s specified procedure.
English-Test Exemptions
Applicants who are nationals of certain English-speaking countries may qualify for an exemption if they provide the required documentation.

MEXT Scholarship Opportunity
GSEP includes an opportunity for outstanding applicants to be recommended for the Japanese Government MEXT Scholarship.
For the April 2027 intake, eight applicants who pass the GSEP examination will be recommended for the scholarship.
According to the programme information, MEXT scholarship recipients receive:
- Waiver of the enrollment fee
- Waiver of tuition
- A monthly stipend of ¥120,000
- Scholarship support for four years
- Possible airfare to and from Japan under applicable MEXT conditions
