Niigata University Graduate Programs and Scholarships for International Students 2027

Niigata University offers international students opportunities to pursue master’s and doctoral studies in areas including science and technology, medicine, dentistry, health sciences, humanities, and social sciences. Selected graduate programs can be studied in English, while the university also provides scholarship support for eligible international students.

English-Taught Graduate Programs

Although many graduate courses at Niigata University are conducted in Japanese, the university identifies several programs where international students can study in English.

Master’s Programs

English-based opportunities include:

  • Major of Sciences and Technologies, Graduate School of Integrated Arts and Sciences
  • Medical Science Program, Graduate School of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences
  • Oral Health and Welfare Program
  • Nursing Program
  • Next-Generation Medical Technology Science Program

Some of these opportunities are available only to students participating in particular educational programs.

Doctoral Programs

English-based opportunities at doctoral level include:

  • All majors in the Graduate School of Science and Technology, subject to specific educational-program conditions
  • Medicine and Dentistry
  • Medical Science
  • Dental Science
  • Oral Health and Welfare
  • Nursing
  • Next-Generation Medical Technology Science

Not every program is completely English-taught, so applicants should confirm the language of instruction and any Japanese-language requirements for their chosen course.

Research Student Route

Niigata University explains that many international students enter first as Research Students for approximately six months to one year.

A Research Student conducts research under the guidance of an academic supervisor before progressing to a graduate degree program.

However, this route is not necessarily compulsory. Depending on the graduate school and supervisor, an international applicant may be able to take the entrance examination without first becoming a Research Student.

Students interested in this pathway should therefore contact an appropriate professor and confirm the admission route for their intended program.

Niigata University International Student Scholarship

Niigata University also provides an International Student Scholarship Program for selected international students.

The scholarship supports eligible students who are entering or already enrolled at the university and who meet the applicable academic and personal criteria.

Eligible categories can include:

  • Privately funded international students participating in certain prioritized government-funded international-student programs
  • Applicants for MEXT university recommendation who were not awarded the MEXT scholarship
  • Participants in international double- or joint-degree programs

The scholarship is not automatically awarded to all international students. Selection and eligibility depend on the student’s category and the university’s applicable criteria.

Scholarship Amount

The university scholarship provides different monthly amounts depending on student status:

Student categoryMonthly amount
Degree-seeking students¥70,000
Research Students¥50,000

The scholarship is therefore separate from the larger Japanese Government MEXT scholarship.

Airfare Support

An additional feature of the Niigata University scholarship is international airfare support.

For eligible scholarship recipients, support includes airfare from the student’s home country to Japan and airfare from Japan back to the student’s home country, subject to the applicable scholarship conditions.

Scholarship Duration

For degree-seeking students, the scholarship may generally continue from the month of enrollment through the final month of the standard study period, provided the student continues to meet the requirements and passes the relevant academic review.

For Research Students, the general scholarship period is from October of the current fiscal year through March of the following year.

Remaining in Research Student status does not automatically provide an extension of the scholarship. If the student later enters a degree program at Niigata University, the applicable scholarship period may be determined according to the degree program.

Can the Scholarship Be Combined With Other Funding?

Niigata University allows the scholarship to be combined with certain other scholarships, including the MEXT Honors Scholarship for Privately Financed International Students and scholarships that permit individual applications.

However, there is an important limit: the combined monthly scholarship amount cannot exceed the monthly amount provided to MEXT scholarship students at the corresponding academic level.

Applicants should therefore check the conditions of both scholarships before accepting multiple sources of funding.

Graduate Admission Process

There is no single admission procedure covering every graduate program at Niigata University.

Requirements can differ according to the graduate school and program.

Applicants should consult the relevant graduate-school information for:

  • Application schedules
  • Eligibility requirements
  • Required documents
  • Entrance examinations
  • Program-specific conditions

The university provides separate information for graduate schools including:

  • Graduate School of Integrated Arts and Sciences
  • Graduate School of Modern Society and Culture
  • Graduate School of Science and Technology
  • Graduate School of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences

Finding an Academic Supervisor

For research-oriented graduate study, identifying an appropriate academic supervisor is an important part of preparing an application.

Prospective students should look for a professor whose research interests are relevant to their proposed field of study.

It can be useful to prepare information about your:

  • Academic background
  • Research interests
  • Proposed research topic
  • Previous research experience
  • Academic transcripts
  • Reasons for wanting to work in the professor’s research area

Applicants should then follow the instructions of their specific graduate school regarding contact with potential supervisors.

Who Can Apply?

The opportunities described here are primarily relevant to students seeking graduate-level study.

In general:

  • A student with a suitable bachelor’s degree may be able to apply for a master’s program.
  • A student with an appropriate master’s-level qualification may be able to apply for doctoral study.
  • Applicants must satisfy the academic and program-specific requirements of their chosen graduate school.
  • Japanese-language ability may be required for programs that are not fully conducted in English.

These opportunities are therefore different from undergraduate scholarships and bachelor’s degree programs.

Is Niigata University Suitable for Bachelor’s Applicants?

The information covered here concerns graduate programs and graduate-level financial support.

Therefore, students who have just completed high school and are searching for an English-taught bachelor’s degree should not place these opportunities in the same category.

For graduate applicants, however, Niigata University may be worth considering, particularly for students interested in science, technology, medicine, health sciences and related research fields.

What Makes Niigata University Attractive?

Selected English-taught programs

International students can find English-based master’s and doctoral opportunities in selected fields, particularly in science, technology, medicine and health-related areas.

University scholarship

Eligible degree-seeking students may receive ¥70,000 per month, while eligible Research Students may receive ¥50,000 per month.

Airfare support

The university scholarship can also include international airfare support for eligible recipients.

Applicants who pursue MEXT university recommendation but are not ultimately awarded MEXT may fall within a category considered for the Niigata University scholarship, subject to the university’s selection process.

Research Student pathway

Some international students may begin as Research Students and conduct research under an academic supervisor before entering a graduate degree program.

Important Financial Consideration

The Niigata University scholarship should not be presented as equivalent to a fully funded MEXT scholarship.

The university scholarship provides ¥70,000 per month for eligible degree-seeking students, while MEXT has a different funding structure and may provide broader financial support.

Students who require comprehensive funding should therefore investigate MEXT and other scholarship opportunities separately rather than assuming that the Niigata University scholarship will cover all study and living expenses.

Before Applying

Applicants should first identify the exact graduate school and program they want to join. They should then confirm the language of instruction, academic eligibility, application schedule, document requirements and whether a Research Student period is necessary.

Students who require scholarship funding should also check the funding conditions separately. Scholarship eligibility does not automatically follow from admission to the university.

For international students seeking a master’s or doctoral degree in Japan, Niigata University is particularly worth investigating where its English-based programs match the applicant’s academic field. The combination of selected English-taught graduate study, research opportunities and university-level financial support makes it a potentially useful option, but applicants should confirm the current requirements for their specific program before applying.
